With the exception of Curb Your Enthusiasm, improv series are rarely seen - let alone successful - on TV and it's a very different style of comedy and pacing. That being said, Quick Draw does take some getting used to as a viewer. In fact, some of the show's best comedy is drawn from sensational real life events, such as the practice of temperance the town Nicodemus, populated entirely by free slaves and the Benders, a family of serial killers who terrorized Kansas (a topic Supernaturalfans will remember fondly). In preparation for Quick Draw, Lehr and Hower did a lot of research on the late 1800s - when forensics really was beginning to emerge -and passed along information and slang terms the cast could draw from to add historical accuracy amidst the lunacy. Though Hoyle's struggles to utilize criminology are often used for laughs, the series is heavily grounded in history. You gotta be on your toes and ready to play your character as well as you can, but at the same time you have no idea what's happening." "The experience of being on set is kind of lemming-like," Brown tells. Now living in Great Bend, Kansas, Hoyle attempts to introduce forensics to the local rubes, who include the dim-witted Deputy Eli (newcomer Nick Brown), the brazen brothel owner Honey ( The Sopranos' Allison Dunbar) and the mopey Undertaker Vernon Shank ( Cougar Town's Bob Clendenin).įor each episode, Lehr and Hower wrote a script outlining the general plotlines, but then allowed the actors to improvise the dialogue and experiment within the basic framework. Quick Draw follows Sheriff John Henry Hoyle (Lehr), a bumbling Harvard grad who is so confident in his intellectual superiority he even boasts about graduating 327 th in his class. Thankfully, Hulu breathed new life into the genre with its original series Quick Draw, an improvised comedy from 10 Items or Less' John Lehrand Nancy Hower. Nevertheless, it’s hard to see any of the more traditional networks being drawn to something like this. Viewed that way, “Quick Draw” represents a pretty conspicuous misfire, pardner. There haven't been a lot of comedy westerns save Blazing Saddles, Three Amigosand Wild Wild West, none of which were released in the new millennium. tour illustrates that the service wants to be taken seriously as an original-programming provider, and anybody committed to playing in the big leagues is going to fire off their share of duds (a la Netflix’s “Hemlock Grove“). “ Quick Draw” virtually dispenses with any of that, which leaves the actors doing little more than playing dress-up, for what feels considerably longer than the premiere’s 23 minutes. Moreover, the western is hardly a regular point of reference for the young guys who are presumably the target audience, given the snarky, let’s-sift-through-that-corpse tone of the humor. Silliness isn’t bad, necessarily, but when confined to such a specific setting, there needs to be some point of view. Yet while Hoyle acts like a buffoon and cites his Ivy League credentials at every opportunity, he’s actually pretty handy with a gun, which becomes apparent when he’s charged with hunting down a gang of outlaws. Hoyle’s deputy (Nick Brown) has seen them all come and go, which understandably gives the new lawman pause - as does a pool among the locals on when he’s going to join the ranks of the deceased. Lehr plays John Henry Hoyle, the new sheriff in a Kansas town where his five predecessors all met a violent end.
